Frequently asked questions

Below are some FAQs on the application process for the Rebuild Facility.

  • The Rebuild Facility’s returnable grant is an interest-free working capital offered to aggregators, off-takers, and buyers of specialty cocoa and coffee. The returnable grant operates as working capital to purchase sustainably produced cocoa and coffee beans.

The Rebuild Facility is focused on protecting the incomes and livelihoods of our forest stewards; smallholder farmers and communities. Therefore, recipient companies of our returnable grants must use them exclusively for the purchase of cocoa or coffee beans.

Once the commodities are successfully sold to end-markets, the grant is returned to Rebuild with 0% interest.

  • The Rebuild Facility works with market access players who purchase sustainably sourced coffee in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda, and cocoa in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana. This includes licenced buying companies, offtakers, and processors of specialty cocoa and coffee. Previous subgrantees have included Rockbern Coffee and Original Foods.

  • The application is divided into sections covering general organisational information, financing requirements, organisational capacity, governance, commodity information, economic impact, environmental impact and livelihoods impact. Please note that the application must be completed in English language. The full list of application questions can be found here.

  • The Rebuild Facility welcomes applications from all applicants, however preference is given to companies with more direct access to farmers such as local exporters, farmer cooperatives, and medium to small scale producers. Prioritizing these companies with potential for higher livelihoods and environmental impact allows us to target our returnable grants as closely as possible to the people behind the global coffee and cocoa supply chains.

  • Once submitted, you will receive email confirmation of receipt of your application, with a copy of your application attached. The Rebuild Facility Team will review the proposal and be in touch with next steps.

  • Once the Rebuild Facility team receives a new application, it takes roughly 4 weeks to review it to determine whether or not to move forward with the application.

Please expect a response within 4 weeks after submitting your application.

  • The entire process from completing the Application Form to funds being released is estimated to take around 7-8 weeks.

However, funds being released will be dependent on when the returnable grant is required and will require full cooperation from applicants in providing the relevant information.

  • There are 4 application rounds throughout the year- January, April, June, and September. When applying online, please indicate which funding window you are applying for.

  • If you have concerns regarding the work of the Rebuild Facility, please use the following link: IKI Independent complaint Mechanism. This is intended to enable people who suffer (potential) negative social and/or environmental consequences from IKI projects, or who wish to report the improper use of funds, to voice their complaints and seek redress. It follows established international standards for International Accountability Mechanisms.

Alternatively or in addition, you may make a report through the independent Palladium Integrity Hotline.
